Dr. Ruíz is Distinguished Professor Emerita of History and Chicano/Latino Studies, University of California, Irvine. She is the fourth Mexican American woman ever to earn a PhD in history. Dr. Ruiz is a pioneer in the history of Mexican Americans/Chicanx and one of the first to research and publish about Mexican American communities, particularly women. As a top change-maker in her field, Dr. Ruíz was awarded the Presidential Humanities Medal by President Obama in 2014.
